Packing fragile items properly is the best way to help ensure they arrive safely.
All FlyBoxes are transported through the FedEx Ground distribution network, just like any other shipped package. During transit, your FlyBox will move through multiple FedEx facilities where it is loaded, unloaded, sorted, stacked, and transported before reaching its destination. As a result, your FlyBox will experience normal shipping conditions, including movement, vibration, handling, and stacking throughout its journey.
Because of this, fragile items should always be packed with enough internal protection to prevent movement and absorb pressure during transit. Taking the time to pack them securely can significantly reduce the risk of damage.
Follow the guidelines below when packing fragile belongings such as dishes, glassware, ceramics, picture frames, mirrors, collectibles, electronics, and other breakable items.
General Packing Guidelines
Wrap Every Fragile Item Individually
Each fragile item should be wrapped separately using bubble wrap or another protective cushioning material. Multiple layers are recommended for especially delicate or valuable items.
Avoid allowing glass, ceramic, or other hard surfaces to touch one another.
Eliminate Empty Space
Once your items are packed, there should be little to no movement inside the FlyBox.
Fill empty spaces with packing paper, towels, clothing, or additional cushioning so items cannot shift during transportation.
Tip: Before closing your FlyBox, check that every item is packed tightly enough that it cannot move within the box. Any empty space should be filled with cushioning materials.
Cushion All Sides
Fragile items should never rest directly against the sides, bottom, or top of the FlyBox.
Leave several inches of cushioning between your items and every side of the box to help absorb impacts during transit.
Pack Heavier Items on the Bottom
Place heavier items at the bottom of the FlyBox and lighter, more delicate items on top.
Never place heavy objects directly on top of fragile items.
Prevent Pressure Points
Avoid packing fragile items in a way that allows them to bear the weight of surrounding items.
For example:
Don't stack plates without protective padding between each one.
Don't place books, weights, or other heavy belongings against glass or ceramics.
Don't allow fragile items to support the weight of the contents above them.
Packing Specific Items
Plates and Bowls
Wrap each plate individually.
Place padding between every plate.
Pack plates vertically (like records) whenever possible.
Fill any gaps so they cannot shift.
Glasses, Mugs, and Cups
Wrap each piece separately.
Fill hollow interiors with packing paper before wrapping.
Separate each item with cushioning.
Picture Frames and Mirrors
Wrap with multiple layers of bubble wrap.
Protect corners with extra padding.
Place between soft items whenever possible.
Large mirrors or oversized glass items are not recommended for shipment.
Electronics
Whenever possible, use the original manufacturer's packaging.
Wrap with protective cushioning.
Ensure the item cannot move inside the FlyBox.
Use Soft Items as Extra Protection
Clothing, towels, blankets, bedding, and pillows make excellent cushioning materials.
Use these items to surround fragile belongings and fill empty spaces inside the FlyBox.

If these items cannot be packed securely enough to prevent movement and protect them from pressure, they may be better transported separately.

Before placing your FlyBox out for FedEx pickup, make sure:

✅ Heavy items are packed beneath lighter items.
